Why do Toronto and Ontario travellers fly from Buffalo?
Buffalo Niagara International Airport (BUF) is about 160 km from Toronto Pearson — roughly two hours by road including the border — and its US domestic fares on Southwest, JetBlue, Delta, American and United are often far cheaper than a Canada-to-US ticket from Pearson, which carries international fees. Ontario residents drive across for Florida, New York, Las Vegas and the West Coast. A pre-arranged chauffeur runs it door to door with passports at the bridge and the toll and bridge fees inside the fixed fare.
The Buffalo run is a genuine Ontario institution: on any winter Saturday the Peace Bridge is a queue of Canadian plates heading for a cheap flight to Fort Lauderdale. It is also the run where a private chauffeur changes the most, because the alternative is your own car parked at BUF for a week, or a shared shuttle on a timetable, and because the border is a variable a chauffeur watches for a living.

The options from Ontario to BUF
| Option | Cost, one-way | Time from Toronto downtown | The catch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pre-booked chauffeur (this service) | Fixed fare by address; QEW tolls, bridge toll and border wait included | ~2 hours | None — passports at the bridge, dropped at the terminal door |
| Drive and park at BUF | Fuel + parking per day + bridge toll | ~2 hours | A week's parking; the drive back after a red-eye; the crossing twice yourself |
| Shared cross-border shuttle | Per-seat | 2.5–3.5 hours with pickups | Timetable, stops, and every passenger clears the border together |
| Megabus / coach to Buffalo | Per-seat | 2.5–3 hours to downtown Buffalo, then a taxi to BUF | Border on foot with the whole coach |
| Rideshare | Rarely accepts cross-border | — | Drivers cannot legally carry passengers across in most cases |
The route, and the bridge decision
From Toronto and Pearson the chauffeur takes the QEW west over the Burlington Skyway past Hamilton and St Catharines to Fort Erie — about 130 km — and crosses the Peace Bridge to Buffalo, then Interstate 190 to the Kensington Expressway and the airport in Cheektowaga: 30 km on the US side. The alternative is the Lewiston-Queenston Bridge off the QEW at St Catharines, crossing to Lewiston and taking I-190 south — a little longer in distance but the better choice when the Peace Bridge is backed up. The Rainbow Bridge in Niagara Falls is a third option, mostly for passengers already in the Falls.
The decision is made at pickup and again at St Catharines on the live CBP border-wait board, which shows the delay at every crossing from the US Customs and Border Protection feed; the Peace Bridge Authority and the Niagara Falls Bridge Commission publish their own conditions and tolls. The bridge toll is inside your fare either way.
Timing by hour, including the border
- Off-peak, midweek: 100–120 minutes from downtown Toronto to the BUF terminal, with a 5–15 minute crossing.
- Weekday commute on the QEW (7–9 am, 4–7 pm): add 30–45 minutes on the Ontario side.
- Friday afternoons and holiday weekends: the Peace Bridge US-bound can run 45–90 minutes; the chauffeur takes Lewiston-Queenston when the board says so.
- Winter: the QEW between Grimsby and St Catharines is a squall section; winter tyres are standard and the margin is longer.
The departure pickup is planned backwards from your airline's check-in cut-off at BUF — the US carriers ask for two hours on domestic flights — plus the drive, plus the border wait the board is showing that day, plus a margin. We confirm it in writing and we say plainly when a time does not work.

What to carry at the bridge
Every passenger needs a valid passport, or a NEXUS card, or another document US Customs and Border Protection accepts for land entry — children included. Visitors who need a visa or an ESTA equivalent for the United States must have it before the bridge. Permanent residents of Canada carry their PR card as well as their passport. The chauffeur will ask at pickup whether everyone has documents, because a passenger turned back at the booth ends the trip for the whole car. Declare food, cash over the reporting threshold and anything the CBP officer asks about; the chauffeur has crossed a thousand times and will tell you what to expect at the booth.
Where the chauffeur drops you and meets you at BUF
Buffalo has a single terminal with departures on the upper level and arrivals on the lower; the chauffeur drops you at the departures curb at the door nearest your airline. For the return, the chauffeur waits inside the baggage-claim hall on the lower level with a name board, tracks the inbound flight, and includes sixty minutes of waiting from touchdown on international arrivals (thirty on domestic). Then the I-190, the bridge — Canadian customs on the way back, where the CBSA declaration and the duty-free limits apply — and the QEW home.
Hamilton, Niagara and St Catharines to Buffalo
Hamilton is an hour from the Peace Bridge, Niagara Falls twenty minutes, St Catharines fifteen. For those cities the Buffalo run is shorter than the drive to Pearson, and the fare difference on a US domestic ticket makes it the obvious choice; the Pearson-to-Hamilton page and the Niagara page both link here for that reason. Every Ontario address is quoted by the engine.
The other cross-border airport: Niagara Falls NY
Niagara Falls International Airport (IAG), twenty minutes from the Rainbow Bridge, has a smaller schedule of low-cost flights to Florida and Myrtle Beach and is sometimes the cheaper choice for Niagara-region passengers; its page explains when.
Vehicles for the Buffalo run
The Luxury SUV for the family flying to Orlando with a week's luggage and a child seat fitted at booking; the Executive Sedan for one or two; the Executive Sprinter for a group — a sports team, a wedding party, a company trip — crossing together on one reservation. The fleet page has capacities for each class.
Get a fixed fare to Buffalo Airport
The fixed fare, with the border inside it
The reservation engine quotes a fixed fare for your exact Ontario address and vehicle class: the chauffeur, the vehicle, the QEW and any 407 toll, the bridge toll, taxes, and — on the return — curbside pickup at BUF and sixty minutes of waiting from touchdown on international arrivals (thirty on domestic). The border wait is our time, not your bill. Gratuity is at your discretion; the flat-rate page explains the whole fare. The cross-border page covers Detroit, New York and the rest of the United States.
What the confirmation contains
Every booking returns an email with the pickup, the airline and flight number, the crossing plan, the vehicle class and the fare; on the day it is followed by the chauffeur's name, mobile number and the vehicle plate. Changes are a reply or a call at any hour; a delayed return flight changes nothing because the pickup follows the aircraft.
Returning to Canada: the border the other way
The return crossing is Canadian customs at the Peace Bridge in Fort Erie or the Lewiston-Queenston Bridge at Queenston, and it is usually quicker than the US-bound direction because the CBSA booths process cars steadily. Every passenger declares purchases; the duty-free limits depend on the length of the trip — the CBSA site lists them — and a chauffeur has no interest in what you bring back beyond making sure the declaration goes smoothly. NEXUS members can use the dedicated lane at the Peace Bridge when everyone in the car holds a card.
Buffalo's terminal, in detail
The terminal is a single building with departures on the upper level, arrivals and baggage claim on the lower, and the airline check-in counters in order along the departures curb. Security is a single checkpoint for all gates and can queue on Saturday mornings in winter, when the sun flights and the Canadian plates arrive together; the airlines' two-hour advice assumes it. The airport's site has the live board and the parking rates for anyone weighing the drive-and-park option.
Groups, teams and the Sprinter across the border
A hockey team heading to a Florida tournament, a company trip to Las Vegas, a wedding party flying to the Caribbean from Buffalo: the Executive Sprinter crosses with fourteen and their bags on one reservation, and every passport is checked at pickup. The booth processes the vehicle as one; the chauffeur handles the paperwork conversation; the private shuttle page covers the group format.
Buffalo by the calendar
The Peace Bridge is quietest on a weekday morning and busiest on Friday afternoons, Sunday evenings and the days around Canadian long weekends, when the leisure traffic and the shopping traffic meet; the summer construction season narrows the plaza lanes; winter squalls off Lake Erie close the QEW near Grimsby a few times a season and the Thruway near Buffalo more often than that. The chauffeur plans the crossing from the live board and the day's forecast, and the departure pickup carries the margin the calendar needs.
Parking at Buffalo versus a chauffeur
BUF's parking is cheaper than Pearson's, which is part of its appeal to Ontario drivers, and the airport publishes the daily rates. Against them stand the fuel and the bridge toll both ways, the two border crossings you make yourself, the week the car spends in a Cheektowaga lot, and the drive back up the QEW at midnight after a Florida flight. For two travellers on a week's trip the chauffeur each way is usually close on cost and far ahead on the experience; for one traveller on a weekend, the drive-and-park can win. We say so.
Timing worked through
A Saturday 9 am Southwest departure from Buffalo has a 7 am cut-off. From downtown Toronto the chauffeur proposes a 4:40 am pickup: the QEW is empty, the Peace Bridge at 6:15 am has a ten-minute queue on the board, and the terminal is reached at 6:45. From Hamilton, 5:30; from St Catharines, 6:05; from Niagara Falls, 6:15. Reverse it for the return: a Delta flight from Atlanta lands at 10:40 pm, the chauffeur is in the baggage hall at 11:00, the Peace Bridge Canada-bound at 11:30 is quick, and Hamilton is reached by 12:30 am. The fare for each was on the confirmation a month earlier.
Buffalo (BUF): questions answered
How long is the border wait at the Peace Bridge?
Typically five to fifteen minutes midweek; forty-five to ninety on Friday afternoons and holiday weekends. Our live border page shows the CBP delay at every Ontario crossing right now.
How far is Buffalo Airport from Toronto?
About 160 km from Toronto Pearson and roughly the same from downtown — about two hours by road including the border crossing, longer on Friday afternoons and holiday weekends.
Which bridge do you use to Buffalo?
The Peace Bridge at Fort Erie by default, or the Lewiston-Queenston Bridge when the live CBP board shows the Peace Bridge backed up. The bridge toll is inside your fare either way.
What documents do I need to cross into the US by car?
A valid passport, NEXUS card or another CBP-accepted land-entry document for every passenger including children, plus a visa or equivalent if your nationality requires one. Permanent residents carry their PR card too.
Is it cheaper to fly from Buffalo than Toronto?
Often, for US domestic destinations — Buffalo's fares on Southwest, JetBlue, Delta, American and United avoid the international fees on a Canada-to-US ticket. Compare the total including the transfer.
Can a rideshare take me across the border to Buffalo?
Generally not — most rideshare drivers cannot legally carry passengers across the border. Licensed cross-border chauffeurs can, and ours do.
Do you pick up at Buffalo Airport for the return?
Yes. The chauffeur waits inside the lower-level baggage hall with a name board, tracks the inbound flight and includes sixty minutes of waiting from touchdown on international arrivals (thirty on domestic).
Do you serve Buffalo from Hamilton, Niagara Falls and St Catharines?
Yes. From those cities Buffalo is closer than Pearson, and every address is quoted by the engine.
