Toronto Pearson at a glance

Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ) is in Mississauga, about 27 km north-west of downtown Toronto. It has two passenger terminals — Terminal 1 (Air Canada, Star Alliance, US pre-clearance) and Terminal 3 (WestJet, Porter's Pearson flights, Air Transat, Sunwing and most other international carriers) — linked by the free Terminal Link train. It is Canada's busiest airport, handling more than 46 million passengers in 2024 according to the Greater Toronto Airports Authority, and the home base of this service.

The Greater Toronto Airports Authority runs the airport and publishes its own maps, parking rates and ground-transport rules; this guide is the passenger's version, organised by the question you are actually asking — which terminal, where the car is, how long customs takes, what the train costs — with the airport's own pages linked wherever a number could change.

American, Delta, JetBlue — with US pre-clearance for these carriers
Cathay Pacific, Korean Air, Japan Airlines, Philippine Airlines, Saudia, Royal Jordanian, El Al, Icelandair, Aeromexico, Caribbean Airlines

The rule of thumb: Air Canada and Star Alliance = Terminal 1; almost everyone else = Terminal 3. Airlines do move — check your boarding pass or the terminal finder — and both terminals have US pre-clearance halls for the carriers based there. Our booking asks for the flight number rather than the terminal, and we work out the meeting point from the airline's own data.

Arriving: from the gate to the arrivals hall

International arrivals at both terminals walk from the gate to Canadian customs, clear at the kiosks or the CBSA primary-inspection counters, collect bags from the carousels on the arrivals level, and pass through the secondary screening exit into the public arrivals hall. Domestic arrivals go directly from the gate to the baggage carousels and out into the same hall. Arrivals from the United States cleared US pre-clearance on departure, so they arrive as domestic passengers. A normal international clearance at Pearson takes 25 to 50 minutes from the aircraft door to the hall; a summer Sunday evening with several wide-bodies down at once can take longer, which is why sixty minutes of waiting on international arrivals (thirty on domestic) are included on every pickup we run.

The GTAA's taxi and limo page sets the curbside rules and confirms that walk-up limos charge about 10 % more than taxis on published zone rates; its pre-arranged programme is the one our chauffeurs operate under, which is why they can wait inside rather than in a lane outside. The pickup page shows the meeting points in detail.

A free automated train runs between Terminal 1, Terminal 3 and the Viscount station (the Value Park lots and the Sheraton-side hotels) around the clock, every few minutes, with a journey of a few minutes between the terminals. It is the way to reach the UP Express from Terminal 3, the Sheraton Gateway hotel from Terminal 1, and a connecting flight at the other terminal — allow twenty minutes terminal to terminal with security.

UP Express, TTC and GO: leaving Pearson by public transport

The UP Express leaves its station beside Terminal 1 every fifteen minutes for Union Station downtown, stopping at Weston and Bloor, and takes about 25 minutes; the adult one-way fare is a little over twelve dollars at the time of writing and children 12 and under ride free. The TTC 900 Airport Express bus runs to Kipling station on Line 2 for a standard fare. GO Transit buses link the airport to Hamilton and Burlington (route 40 via Square One), York Region and Durham with transfers. All three are the right answer for a solo traveller with hand luggage and a station-side destination; the downtown route page compares them with a chauffeur honestly.

Departing: check-in cut-offs, security and pre-clearance

The airlines and the GTAA advise arriving three hours before an international departure and two hours before domestic or US-bound flights. US-bound passengers clear US Customs and Border Protection pre-clearance at Pearson before boarding — the halls at both terminals are busiest in the early morning and the 4–6 pm bank, and the two-hour advice assumes them. Security at Pearson is run by CATSA; the airport publishes live screening wait times on its site. Departure drop-off is at the departures-level curb at each terminal; a pre-arranged chauffeur drops at the door nearest your airline's check-in row. The departure service and its timing table are here.

Parking at Pearson, and the arithmetic

The GTAA publishes its parking rates for the terminal garages (hourly and daily), the Express and Daily lots, and the Value Park garage and lot served by the Terminal Link train. Rates change; the airport's page is the source. The arithmetic that matters for a traveller: for a trip of more than two or three days, daily parking plus fuel both ways plus the lot shuttle often exceeds a chauffeured transfer each way for two people — and the chauffeur is the option where nobody drives the 401 at 11 pm after a transatlantic flight. The Kitchener route page works through the numbers.

Hotels at and near the airport

The Sheraton Gateway is inside the airport, attached to Terminal 3 by a walkway and reached from Terminal 1 by the Terminal Link train. The Dixon Road strip — the Delta, Marriott, Hilton, Crowne Plaza, Four Points, Holiday Inn, DoubleTree and others — is five to ten minutes away and most run courtesy shuttles from the curbside stops. The Airport Corporate Centre hotels along Eglinton and Matheson are ten to fifteen minutes. The airport hotels page explains the shuttles and when a private car beats them.

Lounges, food and the two hours you did not need

Terminal 1 has Air Canada's Maple Leaf Lounges (domestic, international and the transborder lounge in the pre-clearance area), the Plaza Premium Lounge and the American Express Centurion Lounge; Terminal 3 has the Plaza Premium Lounges and the airline lounges of the carriers based there. Both terminals have the usual restaurant rows airside and a smaller landside selection. If a chauffeur delivers you two hours early to a domestic flight and the queue is short, the lounge is where the time goes.

Connecting at Pearson

Domestic-to-international and international-to-domestic connections within Terminal 1 are the simplest; connections between terminals use the Terminal Link train and require re-clearing security at the other terminal. Passengers connecting to a flight at Billy Bishop across the city have no airport-run link and are the transfer we run most between airports. Passengers with an overnight connection use the airport hotels above.

Accessibility

The GTAA provides wheelchair assistance from the aircraft to the arrivals hall and from check-in to the gate, requested through the airline; the terminals have accessible washrooms, elevators to every level and the Terminal Link train is step-free. A pre-arranged chauffeur takes over at the meeting point in the hall; note the requirement at booking and the right vehicle — the SUV or the Sprinter for larger equipment — is assigned without extra charge.

The roads around the airport

Pearson sits at the junction of Highway 427 (north-south, to the QEW and Gardiner south, the 407 and 401 north) and Highway 409 (east to the 401). Everything downtown is the 427 south; everything east is the 401 or the 407; everything north is the 427 to the 400 or 410. The airport's own loop road connects the terminals, the garages and the Dixon Road hotels. The Ontario 511 boards on our live traffic page show all of them; the 407 toll calculator explains the toll road.

What we do here, and how to book it

We meet flights at both terminals inside the hall with a name board, track the aircraft, wait sixty minutes free from touchdown on international arrivals (thirty on domestic), carry the luggage and drive to any address in Ontario, the United States and — through the LimousineWorldwide.Directory network — 59 countries, for a fixed fare the reservation engine quotes before you fly. The Pearson limo page describes the service; the routes describe the journeys; the fleet describes the cars.

Sources and what changes

Airline terminal assignments, parking rates, transit fares and lounge access change; the airport's pages linked above are the source of record and this guide is checked against them. Distances and times on this site are approximate planning figures from Terminal 1, and the engine quotes the exact address.

Terminal 1 in more detail

Terminal 1 is one of the largest airport terminals in the world by floor area, and its layout confuses first-timers because the piers are long: Pier D for domestic gates, Pier E and Pier F for international, and the transborder gates behind US pre-clearance at the north end. Departures are on Level 3, arrivals on Level 1, with the UP Express station, the Terminal Link station and the pre-arranged pickup desk all on or near the arrivals level. The Terminal 1 garage is directly across the roadway from the terminal, connected by covered walkways at each level, and it is where the rideshare zone and most pre-arranged vehicles are parked. The walk from the furthest international gate to the customs hall can be ten minutes; from the customs exit to the pre-arranged desk near Door A, two.

Terminal 3 in more detail

Terminal 3 is older, smaller and quicker to walk. Departures are upstairs, arrivals downstairs on the same level as the carousels, with the arrivals hall opening directly onto the curb. The Terminal 3 garage is across the roadway with covered walkways; the Sheraton Gateway hotel is attached at the departures level by a walkway; the Terminal Link station is at the west end. US pre-clearance for the carriers based at Terminal 3 is on the departures level with its own security screening. The walk from the customs exit to the arrivals hall meeting point is about a minute.

Customs, kiosks and NEXUS

Canadian customs at both terminals uses primary-inspection kiosks for most arriving passengers, with officers at counters for those the kiosk refers and for travellers who prefer a person. NEXUS members use dedicated kiosks and are typically through in a few minutes; the CBSA's own site explains eligibility and the declaration rules, and its ArriveCAN app can be used to submit the declaration in advance. Baggage from an international flight is collected after primary inspection and before the exit; connecting passengers on the same ticket generally re-check bags at the transfer desk beyond customs.

Winter at Pearson

Pearson runs through Toronto winters with de-icing pads at both terminals and a snow-clearing operation that keeps the runways open in almost all conditions; the delays in a storm come from de-icing queues and from inbound aircraft holding, not from the airport closing. For a passenger the practical effect is that a January departure can push back thirty to sixty minutes late and a January arrival can hold before landing — which is why our pickups follow the aircraft rather than the schedule, and why a departure pickup in a storm is planned with a longer margin the evening before.

Where to eat and wait landside

If you have arrived early for a flight or are waiting for someone landing, both terminals have landside cafés and restaurants on the departures level and a smaller selection on arrivals; Terminal 1's landside food is concentrated around the central check-in hall. The arrivals halls have seating, courtesy phones for the hotel shuttles, currency exchange and the car-rental counters. Anyone meeting an arriving passenger without a pre-arranged chauffeur waits at the exit from the secondary-inspection area, which is where the name boards line up.

More Pearson guides

Four longer guides go deeper than this page: the Pearson airport map in words - levels, gate letters and every pickup door; the Pearson parking guide with the posted rates and the sums for a 3, 7 and 14 day trip; restaurants at and near Pearson by terminal and side of security; and things to do near Pearson airport for a layover or a spare half day. For the money question, the taxi fare calculator estimates a metered Toronto fare from the City's tariff.
