How do you get from Pearson Airport to Billy Bishop Airport?
There is no direct shuttle or train between Toronto Pearson and Billy Bishop. By road it is about 27 km and 35 to 50 minutes via Highway 427 and the Gardiner Expressway to the mainland terminal at the foot of Bathurst Street. By transit it is the UP Express to Union Station and then a streetcar or taxi to the ferry, about an hour with luggage. A pre-booked chauffeur meets you inside the Pearson arrivals hall and drops you at the Eireann Quay pavilion, timed to your Porter departure.
Toronto's two airports serve different halves of the same trip. Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport sits on the Toronto Islands, five minutes from the Financial District, and Porter Airlines and Air Canada Express fly its short-haul network to Ottawa, Montreal, Halifax, New York, Boston, Chicago and Washington. Pearson handles everything else. The passenger who flies into Pearson from Europe and needs to be in Ottawa for a meeting the same evening, or who arrives at the island from Newark and has a long-haul departure from Terminal 1 that night, has to cross the city between them — and the connection is not something either airport organises for you.

The connection compared
| Option | Cost | Time, Pearson arrivals hall to the YTZ mainland terminal | The catch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pre-booked chauffeur (this service) | Fixed fare, fixed before you fly | 35–50 min door to door | None — timed to both flights, luggage handled |
| UP Express + streetcar or taxi | UP fare + TTC fare or taxi | 60–75 min | A transfer at Union with bags; the 509/510 streetcars stop short of the terminal |
| Airport taxi or limo from the Pearson curb | GTAA zone rate for downtown | 35–50 min after the queue | No flight tracking; the meter runs if you queue |
| Rideshare | Dynamic | 35–50 min | Surge on arrival waves; pickup bay in the zones at the terminal doors |
The drive and the timing that matters
The chauffeur takes Highway 427 south to the Gardiner Expressway east and exits at Spadina or Lake Shore Boulevard for the last kilometre west to Eireann Quay. Off-peak it is 35 minutes; in the weekday 4–7 pm crawl, 50 to 60. What makes this route unusual is that both ends have a clock. At Pearson the pickup follows your inbound flight's live arrival time with sixty minutes of waiting included from touchdown on international arrivals (thirty on domestic). At Billy Bishop, Porter's check-in closes before departure and the tunnel or ferry crossing takes a few minutes more — the airport publishes its cut-off times, and we plan the connection with a margin on top of them.
We ask for both flight numbers at booking. If the inbound Pearson flight is late, we know before you do, and we will tell you whether the connection is still safe or whether Porter's next departure is the realistic plan. Our live traffic page shows the Gardiner in real time, and the chauffeur is watching it.

Where the chauffeur meets you at Pearson
Inside Terminal 1 beside the pre-arranged desk near Door A, or in the Terminal 3 arrivals hall by baggage claim, with a name board. The chauffeur takes the luggage and walks you to the vehicle; you never join the curbside taxi rank. The Pearson guide covers both halls door by door, and the terminal finder tells you which one your airline uses.
Where the chauffeur drops you at Billy Bishop
Billy Bishop has no curb on the island. Passengers arrive at the mainland pavilion at the top of the pedestrian tunnel on Eireann Quay, where the airport shuttle bus, the taxi stand and the tunnel entrance are; the tunnel walk to the terminal takes about six minutes, and the ferry alternative crosses in ninety seconds. The chauffeur drops you and your bags at the pavilion doors. Going the other way — a Porter arrival connecting to a Pearson departure — the chauffeur waits at the same pavilion, and the booking asks for the Porter flight number so the pickup follows it.
Which vehicle for the two-airport run
The Executive Sedan for one or two travellers with a bag each; the Premium Sedan for the executive you want rested before the Ottawa meeting; the Luxury SUV for a family connecting to a Halifax flight with a week's luggage; the Executive Sprinter for a team travelling together. The fleet page has every class with capacities.
The other way: Billy Bishop to Pearson
The reverse connection is the same road with the same two clocks, and the harder one is usually the Pearson departure: three hours before an international flight, two before domestic or US pre-clearance. A Porter arrival from Boston at 4 pm connecting to a 9 pm flight to Frankfurt from Terminal 1 has plenty of margin; a 6 pm Porter arrival for the same flight does not, and we say so at booking. Drop-off is at the departures door of the right terminal. The departure service is described in full here.
Downtown hotels and the half-day in between
Many two-airport connections have hours to fill, and Billy Bishop is five minutes from the core. A chauffeur booked by the hour can take you from Pearson to a Financial District meeting, wait, and deliver you to the island terminal for the evening Porter flight — one vehicle, one fare, the itinerary shared the night before. The hourly service is on the airport transportation page. If the plan is simpler — Pearson to a downtown hotel tonight, Billy Bishop tomorrow — the downtown route page covers the first leg and the second is a ten-minute transfer we quote as its own address.
What the fixed fare covers
The reservation engine quotes the transfer as a fixed fare: the chauffeur, the vehicle, tolls, taxes, curbside pickup at the Pearson terminal, and sixty minutes of waiting from touchdown on international arrivals (thirty on domestic). It does not change with the Gardiner's traffic or the time of night. Gratuity is at your discretion. Corporate travellers connecting between the two airports weekly use a corporate account so that every leg is on one invoice.

Why we ask for both flight numbers
Because the connection is only as safe as the later of the two flights. Porter publishes its schedule and check-in cut-offs; the inbound airline publishes its live arrival time; the Gardiner publishes nothing and simply happens. With both numbers in the booking we can track the inbound aircraft, know the outbound cut-off, and tell you at 30,000 feet whether the plan holds. That is a small thing to type and a large thing to have.
Porter's network, and who makes this connection
Porter Airlines built Billy Bishop into a business airport: Ottawa, Montreal and Quebec City hourly on weekdays; Halifax, Moncton, St John's and Thunder Bay; and the US cities that matter to Bay Street — Newark, Boston, Chicago Midway, Washington Dulles, and seasonal routes to Florida. Air Canada Express adds Montreal and Ottawa. The Pearson-to-island connection is therefore mostly a business traveller who has arrived from Europe or Asia and has a same-day domestic meeting, or a US-based traveller who flew into the island and is departing long-haul from Terminal 1 — and, in summer, families connecting a Porter flight from the Maritimes to a Pearson departure for the sun.
The transit alternative in detail
If you take it, here is how it works. From Terminal 1 the UP Express leaves every fifteen minutes and reaches Union Station in about 25 minutes; from Terminal 3, the free Terminal Link train takes you to the UP platform first. At Union, the TTC 509 Harbourfront or 510 Spadina streetcars run west along Queens Quay and stop near Bathurst; from there it is a walk of several minutes to the Eireann Quay pavilion, or a short taxi ride. Billy Bishop also runs its own free shuttle bus from the Fairmont Royal York on Front Street to the mainland terminal. With a suitcase and a connection to make, budget an hour and a quarter from the arrivals hall; with two suitcases, the chauffeur.
Timing worked through
An Air Canada flight from London Heathrow lands at Terminal 1 at 2:15 pm. Customs and baggage take forty minutes on an average afternoon; the chauffeur, who has been tracking the flight, is beside the pre-arranged desk with a board. The Gardiner at 3 pm is moving: 40 minutes to Eireann Quay, arriving 3:40. Porter's 5:30 pm departure to Ottawa is comfortable; the 4:30 is tight but possible; the 4:00 is the one we would have advised against at booking. Reverse it for the evening: a Porter arrival from Boston at 6:20 pm, the Gardiner westbound at 6:45 in the last of the commute, Terminal 1 by 7:40, and a 10:30 pm departure to Frankfurt with the three-hour international cut-off met. We run that arithmetic for every booking and say plainly when it does not work.
What the confirmation contains
Every booking returns an email with both flight numbers, the pickup point at each end, the vehicle class, the fare and — on the day — the chauffeur's name and plate. Changes are a reply or a call at any hour. If the inbound flight is delayed past the point where the connection holds, we tell you what the next realistic Porter departure is before you land; the pickup simply moves.
Luggage, and the tunnel
Billy Bishop's pedestrian tunnel has moving walkways and elevators at both ends, so a suitcase is no obstacle, but the walk from the pavilion to the check-in hall is a genuine six or seven minutes and the ferry alternative adds its own queue at peak. The chauffeur drops you and your bags as close to the pavilion doors as the airport's curb rules allow; from there it is the tunnel or the ferry, your choice. Coming the other way, the chauffeur meets you at the top of the tunnel on the mainland side — not on the island, where there is no vehicle access for pre-arranged cars — so allow the crossing time when you read the pickup time on the confirmation.
Pearson and Billy Bishop: questions answered
Does Porter fly from Pearson as well as Billy Bishop?
Yes — Porter operates jet routes from Pearson's Terminal 3 in addition to its turboprop network from Billy Bishop. Check which airport is on your Porter ticket before booking the transfer; the two are 27 km apart and the connection between them is this page.
Is there luggage storage if I have a long gap between the two flights?
Both airports offer paid luggage-storage services in their terminals. For a gap of several hours many travellers instead book the chauffeur by the hour and keep the bags in the car while they go downtown.
How far is Pearson from Billy Bishop Airport?
About 27 km by road via Highway 427 and the Gardiner Expressway — 35 to 50 minutes off-peak to the mainland terminal at Eireann Quay, 50 to 60 in the weekday afternoon peak.
Is there a shuttle between Pearson and Billy Bishop?
No direct public shuttle or train connects the two airports. By transit it is the UP Express to Union Station and then a streetcar or taxi to the ferry, about an hour with luggage. We run the door-to-door transfer timed to both flights.
How much time do I need to connect between Pearson and Billy Bishop?
Allow the customs and baggage time at Pearson, the 35 to 60 minute drive depending on the hour, the tunnel or ferry crossing, and Porter's published check-in cut-off with a margin on top. We plan it with both flight numbers and tell you at booking whether it holds.
Where does the chauffeur drop me at Billy Bishop?
At the mainland pavilion on Eireann Quay at the top of the pedestrian tunnel, where the airport shuttle and taxi stand are. The tunnel walk to the terminal takes about six minutes.
Can you pick me up at Billy Bishop and take me to Pearson?
Yes. The chauffeur waits at the Eireann Quay pavilion, tracks your Porter flight, and drops you at the departures door of your Pearson terminal in time for the check-in cut-off.
Which airport is closer to downtown Toronto?
Billy Bishop, by a wide margin — it is a short tunnel walk from the foot of Bathurst Street, five minutes from the Financial District. Pearson is 27 km north-west.
