How do I get from Pearson Airport to the University of Waterloo or Laurier?

By chauffeur it is seventy-five to ninety minutes: the 401 west past Milton and Cambridge to Highway 8, the Conestoga Parkway into Waterloo and off at University Avenue, delivered to the residence door — Village 1, Ron Eydt Village, Mackenzie King Village, Claudette Millar Hall, UW Place or Columbia Lake at Waterloo; Bricker, Waterloo College Hall, King Street Residence, Leupold or Conrad Hall at Laurier — as a fixed fare by vehicle class. Curbside pickup at Pearson's pre-arranged area is included with sixty minutes of waiting on international arrivals and thirty on domestic; meet and greet inside the hall is a paid add-on. The reservation engine shows the fare before you pay.

The public route is the GO Transit bus from Pearson's Terminal 1 to Square One, another to Kitchener, and the ION light rail or a bus up to University Avenue — three hours with the changes and the luggage carried at each. The GO train from Union to Kitchener runs a few times a day and adds the UP Express and a taxi at the far end. The Kitchener-Waterloo route page compares all of them hour by hour; the short version is that the chauffeur is ninety minutes door to door at a fixed fare, and for a student with a term's luggage or a family it is the only version that ends at the residence.

University Avenue: Waterloo and Laurier share the same block and the same drive
University Avenue: Waterloo and Laurier share the same block and the same drive

Two campuses, one avenue

The University of Waterloo's main campus is the large site north of University Avenue between Westmount and Columbia; Wilfrid Laurier's is the compact campus south of the avenue between King and Albert Streets, a five-minute walk away. Waterloo's residences — Village 1 and Ron Eydt Village on the ring road, Mackenzie King Village and Claudette Millar Hall on the south campus, UW Place on Phillip Street, Columbia Lake Village on the north side, and the affiliated colleges (St. Paul's, St. Jerome's, Renison, Conrad Grebel) each with their own door on Westmount or the ring road — are reached from University Avenue at Seagram Drive or from Westmount Road, and the chauffeur knows which entrance is closest to which building. Laurier's residences are along King Street, Bricker Avenue and University Avenue itself, with lay-bys at each; the student towers along King, Columbia and Lester Streets, where most upper-year students live, are ordinary addresses with a driveway. The two campuses share a fare: University Avenue is one address zone.

The co-op calendar: four arrivals a year

Waterloo's co-op programme is the reason this route runs all year. Terms change every four months — January, May and September — and each change sends thousands of students to placements across Canada and the United States and brings thousands back, with the airport in the middle. A co-op student flying to a placement in San Francisco, Seattle or New York books the departure from the residence or the King Street apartment to Pearson; four months later the return is the same trip reversed, often to a different address. Laurier's co-op runs on the same calendar. The fixed fare and the flight tracking are what make the four-times-a-year trip routine rather than a scramble, and students who have done it once keep the confirmation email and rebook from it. September remains the heaviest: the move-in weekend before Labour Day, with assigned arrival windows per residence and the ring road marshalled, and the international arrivals in the last week of August met inside Terminal 1 or 3 with a name board on the meet-and-greet add-on.

The Region of Waterloo airport: the honest alternative

The Region of Waterloo International Airport at Breslau is twenty minutes from the campuses and, for the flights that land there — Flair and a handful of WestJet and seasonal routes — it is the better arrival, and this site says so. It is a fixed fare to University Avenue too. The London airport is an hour the other way. But the overwhelming majority of international students and visiting families land at Pearson, because that is where the long-haul flights are, and the ninety-minute drive is the trip that matters; the Breslau alternative is the one to check when the itinerary is being built, not after.

Kitchener city hall: the tech corridor is the reason visitors keep coming
Kitchener city hall: the tech corridor is the reason visitors keep coming

The tech corridor and the working visitor

Waterloo is the second reason for this route: the technology companies around the campuses — in the David Johnston Research + Technology Park on the north campus, along Phillip Street, in the Tannery and the Communitech hub in downtown Kitchener, and at the large employers on the edge of the city — bring a constant traffic of recruiters, investors, visiting engineers and executives who fly into Pearson, spend a day or two in Waterloo and fly out. A visitor's trip is the airport transfer to a hotel — the Delta on King, the Walper, the Crowne Plaza Kitchener, or the hotels along the Conestoga Parkway — and a chauffeured day that moves between the campus, the research park and the downtown offices, on a corporate account with monthly invoicing. Recruiters running interview days in the co-op building at Waterloo book the same way, and the Perimeter Institute on Caroline Street hosts the conferences whose delegates arrive in groups on the Sprinter.

From the campus: St. Jacobs, Stratford and the region

A visiting family's Saturday in Waterloo has more in it than the campus. St. Jacobs, the Mennonite village and its farmers' market, is fifteen minutes north; Stratford and its festival theatre are forty-five minutes west; the Elora Gorge is thirty minutes north; and the breweries and the Kitchener market are downtown. A chauffeured half-day covers them with the student collected at the residence, and the Oktoberfest in October — the largest outside Germany — fills the hotels and the calendar for a week. The GO station in Kitchener is the connection for a student going to Toronto by train after a chauffeured start.

Departures and what the fare includes

The departure to Pearson is the 401 eastbound, planned backwards from the flight with the pickup at the residence at the time that reaches the terminal ninety minutes before a domestic departure and two and a half to three hours before an international one — the Milton-to-Mississauga stretch of the 401 is the buffer, and the chauffeur reads the live feed before leaving. The fare is fixed by vehicle class for the University Avenue address and includes the chauffeur, the vehicle, fuel, tolls, taxes, curbside pickup at the pre-arranged area and the included waiting; meet and greet is the paid add-on; gratuity is never added; a co-op return four months out can be added to the same confirmation.

Graduate students, the January intake and the winter 401

Waterloo's January intake, the return from the winter break and the January co-op change all put this ninety-minute drive into the worst of the winter: the 401 between Milton and Cambridge crosses open farmland where the snow drifts and the squalls off Lake Huron reach on a west wind, and the closures — a jack-knifed transport at Highway 6, whiteout at Cambridge — happen a few times each winter. The chauffeur reads Ontario 511 before leaving, the vehicles run winter tyres, and a drive that cannot be made safely is rescheduled rather than attempted; a trip already under way waits out a closure at the Cambridge service centre with the passengers warm inside. Graduate students with families, visiting scholars with a year's luggage and the exchange students on a single term are the mid-year arrivals, with addresses that are the graduate apartments, a rented unit in the Northdale towers whose keys are collected from a leasing office, or a hotel for the first week.

The airport, the station and the ION

Waterloo's connections are the reason a chauffeured trip is often a link rather than a destination: a student flying into Pearson and continuing to a co-op placement in Ottawa or Montréal by VIA Rail from Kitchener station; a parent arriving by GO train from Union and collected at the Kitchener GO station for the last ten minutes; the ION light rail along King Street for the days when the student has no luggage. The Region of Waterloo airport at Breslau and the London airport an hour west are the other gateways, and each is a fixed fare to University Avenue. A student heading home to Michigan books the cross-border service to Detroit, two and a half hours west, with the border wait checked before leaving.

FAQ

Waterloo & Laurier: questions answered

Is the fare the same to Waterloo and to Laurier?

Yes. The two campuses share University Avenue and are one address zone, and the student towers along King, Columbia and Lester Streets price the same. Only the vehicle class changes the fare.

Should I fly into the Region of Waterloo airport instead?

If your airline lands there, yes — it is twenty minutes from the campuses and a lower fare. Most international and long-haul flights land at Pearson, and the ninety-minute drive is the trip this page covers.

Can I book the co-op departure and the return four months later together?

Yes. Both legs go on one confirmation with their flight numbers; the return address can be different from the departure address, and either leg can be changed up to the day before.

How does the chauffeur handle the 401 at rush hour?

The Milton-to-Mississauga stretch is the one that stalls, on weekday afternoons and Friday evenings. The chauffeur reads the live feed before leaving and the fare does not change with the time the drive takes.

Which Waterloo residence doors can the car reach?

All of them: Village 1 and Ron Eydt on the ring road, Mackenzie King and Claudette Millar on the south campus, UW Place on Phillip, Columbia Lake on the north side, and the four affiliated colleges on Westmount. Give the building name and the chauffeur uses the right entrance.

Do you drive to the research park and Communitech for company visits?

Yes, by the hour on a corporate account: a hotel pickup, the day's meetings across the research park, Phillip Street and downtown Kitchener, and the departure timed to the flight.

Can we visit St. Jacobs or Stratford from the campus?

Yes. St. Jacobs is fifteen minutes north and the Stratford Festival forty-five minutes west; both are hourly bookings with the student collected at the residence. The Stratford page has the theatre timings.

What luggage can a student bring at move-in?

A sedan takes two large cases; an SUV four plus boxes; the Sprinter a family and everything a residence room needs. Tell us the count at booking.

Is there a GO train from Pearson to Waterloo?

Not directly. The GO bus from Terminal 1 changes at Square One and Kitchener, about three hours; the GO train runs from Union a few times a day. The chauffeur is ninety minutes door to door.

Can the chauffeur wait during convocation?

Yes. Waterloo's ceremonies run over several days in June and Laurier's in June and October; the family car waits at the hourly rate and drives on to lunch or to the airport afterwards.

How does the chauffeur compare with an Uber or a taxi from Toronto airport to Waterloo?

An Uber or a metered taxi for ninety minutes on the 401 is priced by the mile with surge and traffic; the chauffeur's fare is fixed for University Avenue before you fly, includes the tolls and the waiting on a delayed flight, seats the luggage and ends at the residence door. The GO bus is the cheap option for one; the fixed fare is competitive with a taxi for two or more and certain.

Can a group of students share one vehicle to Waterloo?

Yes. Four with luggage fit the SUV and up to ten the Sprinter, on one booking met at the group meeting point inside the terminal and delivered to Waterloo and Laurier residences in turn — they are minutes apart — with the fare split however the group likes.

What if the 401 closes in a snowstorm?

The chauffeur reads Ontario 511 before leaving; a drive that cannot be made safely is rescheduled at no charge, and a trip already under way waits out a temporary closure at the Cambridge service centre with the passengers warm inside.

Can I be collected at Kitchener GO station instead of Pearson?

Yes. A parent arriving by GO train from Union books the station-to-campus transfer as a short fixed fare; a student continuing by VIA Rail to Ottawa or Montréal books the reverse.
